The Little Marble Top Washstand

This little sucker of a project had me pulling my hair out for an afternoon. It’s a small marble top wash stand. The marble top can come on and off for easy transporting and it is amazing the difference in the weight when the marble is on vs. when it is off.

I love Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint, don’t get me wrong, but in typical milk paint fashion it did what it wanted to do. I put two coats of a half and half mixture of Ironstone and Farmhouse White  on the washstand and it all chipped off after it dried and I started trying to distress it.

Not milk paints’ fault at all… I didn’t sand the piece well enough during prep work portion of the project and because the finish was so slick the milk paint almost all fell off when dried.

Nothing sucks more than putting time and effort into something and it not working out….. Like ex-boyfriends…

I took a beat for about 30 minutes and then pulled up my big girl pants and got back to work. I had tackled bigger projects in the past and had come out victorious so this washstand wasn’t gonna be my kryptonite.

I sanded the piece better this time, making sure that there was a rough surface to work with and mixed up up another round of ironstone & farmhouse white.

Success! 2 coats of Milk successfully stuck this time. There was the predicted chipping but not nearly as dramatic as before.

I lightly distressed the piece on edges and took off any piece of chippy paint that wanted to fall away.

As always, my last step was brushing on a coat of Clear Matte Polycrylic Protective Finish to seal in all of that chippy gold.

This piece was missing the majority of it’s pulls and knobs so I need to replace them. If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen my adventure to hobby lobby and working through the decision making process of which pulls and knobs to pick. decisions, decisions and WAY TOO MANY OPTIONS!!!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Hobby Lobby… I love you but I hate you… Time seems disappear when I’m in your establishment. I’ll go in at 10 am and black out. Next thing I know, I’ve time traveled, it’s 8:30 pm and the employees just want me to leave. STAHP PUTTING PRETTY THINGS IN FRONT OF FACE AND RUNNING GOOD SALES! IT’S MADNESS.

…………………….. anyways…………………..

I love what I chose and I think they work perfectly with the overall look of the washstand.

Pulls – Glass Handles with Round Ends

Knobs – Antique Brown & Clear Glass Knobs

For now, this little guy is gonna to park itself at my house. We are currently using it as a small entry way piece to drop keys and dog assessories when we are coming and going.

Also, If you wanna know how to get the “chippy paint” look for your furniture DIY projects you can check out my past post on the subject here!
